History and Future - A Journey of Design

Date: 09-12 September, 2019
Venue: H4, SWEECC

A young architect created Staatliches Bauhaus, a design school with extreme enthusiasm 100 years ago. A group of educated youth have been gathered in the school. Until today, Bauhaus’ influence on modern design can be seen everywhere in the world, including in Paris, London, New York, Tokyo, and today’s China. This exhibition has three sections, and the Bauhaus which influenced the world for a whole century is the start. Then it comes to the origin of modern Chinese design, Shanghai, and finally to the international trend of the modern Chinese design. Guided by three themed spaces, three time spans and multidimensional contents, the exhibition will represent an in-depth interpretation for its audience.

1)1840-1949 Modern design origin
Since Shanghai was opened as a commercial port in 1842, local people’s acceptability towards imported products rose, national industry began developing and Shanghai started exploring and practicing ‘Shanghai-style’ design gradually. By today, Shanghai furniture industry and design field are still proud of Shanghai-style furniture and regard it as a banner which has a continuous influence on Shanghai design.
2)1949-1978 ‘Made in Shanghai’, the development of modernism
After the founding of the New China, the focus of design shifted from serving bourgeoisie to the people. The Bauhaus-style international design was widely accepted during that time when the industrial system was built initially.
Some well-known household supplies like Shanghai brand furniture, Shanghai brand limousine, Butterfly brand sewing machine and Forever brand bicycle all originated from Shanghai, the birthplace and design practice place of China’s modern industry. As the cradle of China’s modernism, Shanghai has played a role of bellwether in the development process of Chinese design.
